Not many people outside of Belgrade realize how clever the city's animals are. Stray dogs wait for the green light at traffic lights before they venture to the other side of the road (looking both left and right as they do so). Of course, dogs are cleverness lightweights compared to the cats of this city – and some cats are really special.
This is the story of how Somerset the talking ginger tom cat became a cat detective.
The first Somerset cat mystery tale in an ongoing cat mystery series for adults.
Note this is a short story approx 6000 words.

Somerset decided to sneak out of the apartment in the middle of the night to hunt for a snack in the park - maybe a tasty rabbit or rat or perhaps a juicy squirrel or even a scrawny pigeon. All because he was "starving" since his human, Zorica, had decided he was obese (a term he found objectionable) and had put him on a diet of dried tuna flakes.Dried tuna flakes! Of all the nerve! A cat cannot survive on dried tuna flakes! Especially not a special cat like Somerset! So he simply HAD to go hunting! Which is how the whole story unfolded.
Somerset never did find a juicy rabbit or scrawny pigeon. In fact he never found a snack at all that night because he became too distracted almost as soon as he left home.
Just as Somerset was exiting through his cat door, someone opened Mrs. Popovic's door. Somerset liked Mrs. Popovic: she would bring him treats when she came to see Zorica. But the man leaving her apartment smelled of adrenaline and was moving quickly. Something was wrong here, and Somerset decided he should follow the man. He had watched a lot of CSI shows on TV with Zorica, and he knew it was important to know where this man was going.
And so we are off on an adventure with Somerset before we even know what crime - if any - has been committed. But at least Somerset HAS seen someone, and he has followed him so if something has happened in Mrs. Popovic's apartment, he will know where to begin looking for answers.
This is the first Somerset story (although there is a second one available at this time) so I didn't know anything about Somerset. Somerset began the story by talking with Zorica. I assumed he was "talking" to her in his mind and imagining her answers to him (rather like in the movie Homeward Bound). However, towards the end of the book we learn that Somerset is indeed a talking cat: he actually carries on conversations with Zorica. However, she is the only one to whom he speaks (like the horse Mr. Ed).
This is a quick read and a light story which proved to be a nice way to spend a lazy afternoon while my husband watched the football game. I would be happy to read more stories with Somerset. Cute little cozies. Very light mysteries. Fat cat like my brother-in-law had. I was right at home!

Somerset the Cat Cozy Belgrade Mysteries The Case of Old Mrs Popovic edition by Mike Jelley Ceri Clark Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
This was a very enjoyable short story. Somerset notices something is amiss and puts his nose into gear to find the culprit and help the police bring him to justice. It is a bit short but that did not detract in the least. I hope to read more about this cats exploits in bringing those who have darkness in their hearts to task.
Keep em coming
Such a cute story!! Love the narration...can't wait to read book two!!
I love books with talking cats (Shirley Rousseau Murphy's
Joe Grey mysteries) but this took me to a particular area that I am going to be visiting soon. LOVED IT AND WANT TO SEE MORE.
I thought this story was so good, so cute. I love the concept of talking cats anyway, but a "detective" cat is even better. I looked for more by this author, but didn't find any. I hope he uses this lead kitty character to write an entire series. It's fun light reading. A little mystery, a little humor and a cat, a talking cat at that. What more could you want?
Too juvenile. And perhaps I don't really enjoy a story set in such depressing surroundings. The interaction and relationship between Somerset and his owner is not interesting or enjoyable, certainly not worth investing any more time to see where it leads. Give me Joe Grey and friends, or Smudge from other cat detecting series any day.
This was a very quick read, but it was a lot of fun. Somerset is a talking cat who lives in Belgrade. He witnesses a shady character leaving a neighbor's apartment and sets off to find out who that person is. When it turns out the neighbor was murdered, he figures out how to bring the killer to justice.
Again, a very quick read - less than 30 minutes - but worth the fun.
Somerset the Cat can speak, which isn't explained, but just accepted as reality in this short story. He's on a diet of tuna flakes until he trims down a bit, and he's not happy about it...but while he's on the prowl for a snack, he ends up chasing after a miscreant he sees leaving the apartment of the neighbor, Mrs. Popovic, he realizes the diet is in order. Turns out, Mrs. Popovic was murdered, so Somerset heads back out to trace the path, remember a clue and getting the police to track down the right man. Short story. Interesting premise. Would read another, esp if Jelley explains the talking cat situation.
